ESMA:
Audit Priorities for the 2025 Audit Season

On October 24, 2024, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) published its audit priorities for the upcoming 2025 audit season (PDF). These must be taken into particular consideration when preparing and auditing the IFRS financial statements of capital market-oriented companies for the 2024 financial year.

IFRS financial statements

The key audit matters for the IFRS financial statements relate to liquidity considerations (in particular supplier financing agreements, covenants and certain aspects of the cash flow statement) as well as accounting policies, judgment and significant estimates (in particular in connection with the existence of control, joint control or significant influence and revenue from customer contracts).

Sustainability reporting

In the area of sustainability, the focus should be on the materiality assessment for reporting in accordance with the ESRS, the scope and structure of the sustainability report and the disclosures in accordance with Article 8 of the EU Taxonomy Regulation.

ESEF

With regard to the European Single Electronic Format (ESEF), ESMA is focusing on frequently identified errors in the labeling of the balance sheet.

General comments

The ESMA statement also contains some general comments in Section 4 on certain topics, including the relationship between financial and sustainability reporting, which remain of particular importance to issuers. Although these topics are not enforcement priorities for the 2024 financial statements, issuers should pay particular attention to them as they (i) follow on from previous recommendations for improvement, (ii) may be relevant to certain sectors or areas of activity, or (iii) relate to new reporting requirements.
